In 2013 St Joseph’s implemented a whole school approach to social and emotional learning(SEL) using the KidsMatter social and emotional mental health and wellbeing framework. Via this initiative we focus on the development of social and emotional well being for our students and the development of continued support for our students and families in the area of mental health and wellbeing.
Our teaching staff undertake continued in-services and the development of curriculum with a focus on support for the mental health and social and emotional well-being of our students and their families. As such The Second Step program which is a formal approach to the teaching of social and emotional well-being intelligence and competency. These lessons are taught on a weekly basis in each class. At the same time our teachers will take advantage of ‘teaching moments’ in other areas of the curriculum.
Parents are also supported in the development of key competences of resilience, organisation, confidence, getting along and confidence through parent workshops, parent information evenings, access to websites and resources, and access to materials to support their children and reinforce the development of key competencies at home.
