At St Joseph’s we have a strong focus on the development of literacy skills.
Our approach to Literacy employs the Children’s Literacy Success Strategy (CLaSS)
Which is based on the belief that three factors predict progress including:

  • High expectations of student achievement
  • Engaged learning time and
  • Structured teaching focused on the learning needs of students.

Individual needs are addressed through focused teaching within small groups.  There is ongoing and systematic monitoring of progress. St Joseph’s provides varying levels of support to individual children to cater for all students in their literacy development.

A Reading Recovery program is provided for those children in Year 1 who need intensive intervention to develop competency in Reading and Writing.
